The Art of the Perfect Fit: Resizing an Heirloom Diamond Ring

When you possess a piece of jewelry with immense sentimental and monetary value, the idea of having it cut apart and resized can be nerve-wracking. Will it look different? Will the diamonds be safe? Will there be a visible seam?

Recently, we documented the process of resizing a breathtaking heirloom diamond ring featuring a brilliant center stone, a diamond halo, and intricate pavé-set bands.
Here is a behind-the-scenes look at exactly how professional ring resizing is done at the bench.
Step 1: The Precision Cut
The process begins at the wooden bench peg. To resize a ring, the bottom of the band (the shank) must be opened. Larry uses an ultra-fine, serrated jeweler's saw to make a perfectly straight, microscopic cut through the gold.
Why this matters: We never stretch or "hammer" a ring to make it larger, especially one with side diamonds. Stretching compromises the metal's integrity and warps the settings holding the stones.
Step 2: Filing and Prepping the Seam
Once the band is cut open, Larry takes a precision needle file to the raw edges of the gold. This step ensures that the two sides of the metal are completely flat and free of debris.
If sizing down: A tiny, exact measurement of gold is removed from the band, and the two clean edges are brought together.
If sizing up: The gap is opened, and a new piece of matching gold (the exact same karat and alloy blend) is expertly fitted into the space.
Step 3: Adjusting and Soldering
Using specialized jeweler's pliers, Larry adjusts the curvature of the ring to perfectly align the newly filed edges.
This is the most critical step for a ring with pavé diamonds. Changing the curve of a ring's shank can pull the metal prongs away from the side stones, causing them to fall out. Larry’s decades of experience ensure the geometry of the ring remains completely stable. Once perfectly aligned, the seam is permanently fused together using a jeweler's torch and high-karat gold solder.
Step 4: Finishing and Polishing
After the soldering is complete, the ring looks a bit rough from the heat. Larry then places the ring on a steel mandrel to ensure it is perfectly round and true to size. Finally, he uses a series of abrasive wheels and polishing compounds to completely erase any evidence of the seam.
The finished product is a ring that looks absolutely pristine—as if it were custom-made for your finger from the very beginning.
