FAQs | Jewelry Stringing & Pearl Restringing in Sacramento

Fine beads and pearls are strung on silk or high-performance cord that naturally stretches and weakens over time. To prevent loss or breakage, Stark Jewelers provides professional restringing services in our Sacramento studio to keep your necklaces and bracelets secure and beautiful.

  • Most pearl and bead necklaces are strung on silk thread. Over time, this thread absorbs skin oils, perfumes, and perspiration, which causes it to stretch, discolor, and eventually fray or snap. Professional restringing ensures that the cord is strong and the knots are tight, protecting your valuable gemstones from falling off and getting lost.

  • s a general rule, we recommend a professional inspection once a year.

    • Frequent Wear: If you wear your pearls weekly, you may need restringing every 12 to 18 months.

    • Occasional Wear: For pieces worn only on special occasions, every 3 to 5 years is usually sufficient.

    • Warning Signs: If you notice gaps between the pearls, if the knots look frayed or dirty, or if the necklace hangs "limp," it is time for a refresh.

  • Knotting involves tying a small, precise knot between every single pearl or bead. We highly recommend this for two reasons:

    1. Security: If the strand breaks, you will only lose one pearl instead of the entire set scattering.

    2. Protection: It prevents the pearls from rubbing against each other, which can wear down the delicate nacre (the outer coating) of the pearl.

  • Yes. We provide restringing for a variety of materials, including:

    • Cultured and natural pearls

    • Semi-precious gemstone beads (Turquoise, Amethyst, Onyx, etc.)

    • Heirloom coral or amber

    • Modern glass or crystal beads

  • Absolutely. Restringing is the perfect time to modernize a piece or make it more functional. If you find your current clasp difficult to use, we can show you a variety of secure options, from classic safety fishhooks to modern magnetic or toggle clasps in gold and sterling silver.

  • Because professional stringing is a meticulous, hand-crafted process, it typically takes 1 to 2 weeks. This ensures the thread has time to settle and that each knot is perfectly placed for the best drape and security.

  • Pricing is generally based on the length of the strand. A standard 16-inch to 18-inch strand of pearls is a very affordable way to protect your investment. We provide a precise quote during your 15-minute consultation once we assess the size of the beads and the condition of the piece.

  • Care Tip: Never store your pearls in a plastic bag; they need to "breathe." Store them in a soft pouch away from other jewelry that might scratch them.

  • Yes, absolutely. Every bespoke creation designed, crafted, or serviced in our studio is backed by our Lifetime Craftsmanship Guarantee. We view a custom commission as the beginning of a lifelong relationship, and we stand entirely behind the structural integrity of our work.

  • Our guarantee covers any manufacturing or structural defects in the metalwork and settings of your jewelry. If your piece experiences a fault due to a crafting flaw, we will repair or replace it at no cost to you. It also includes Complimentary Lifetime Cleaning, Polishing & Inspection, which covers professional cleaning, polishing, and comprehensive prong and setting inspections to ensure the structural integrity of the piece.

  • Our craftsmanship warranty does not cover:

    • Normal Wear and Tear: Gradual thinning of metal, worn prongs over time of daily wear, or scratching, chipping, fracturing of the gemstone itself once it is in your care.

    • Accidental Damage or Trauma: Physical impact (e.g., dropping the piece, crushing a band, catching a prong on a hard surface) or exposure to harsh household chemicals.

    • Loss or Theft: The warranty does not cover the loss of the jewelry piece or the loss of a major center stone.

    • Third-Party Alterations: Any work performed by a jeweler outside of Stark Jewelers immediately voids the warranty.

  • High-end, bespoke jewelry is engineered with incredibly precise tolerances. When a piece is resized or altered, the metal must be heated and manipulated.

    • Outside jewelers may use incompatible metal alloys or lower-carat solders, creating micro-structural weak points that didn't exist when the piece left our studio.

    • Altering the band changes the structural tension holding your diamonds and gemstones. If an outside jeweler resizes a ring without meticulously retightening every single accent stone, those stones will become dislodged.

To maintain our strict standards of excellence and protect your investment, we require that all alterations, resizings, and repairs be performed exclusively by our master jewelers.

  • We recommend bringing your Stark Jewelers pieces into our studio every six to twelve months for a complimentary professional cleaning and safety inspection. Our master jewelers will inspect the prongs, settings, and stones to ensure everything remains perfectly secure.

  • We take full responsibility for the masterful setting of your gemstones at the time of manufacturing, meaning they are structurally secure when they leave our studio. However, our warranty does not cover the natural degradation, scratching, chipping, or fracturing of the gemstone itself caused by everyday wear or external forces.

Because gemstones are natural materials, they have inherent geological properties:

    • Even a diamond, the hardest natural substance, can chip or cleave if struck at a precise angle against a hard surface.

    • Softer or more porous gemstones (like emeralds, opals, and tanzanites) can naturally dull, scratch, or erode over time due to contact with everyday surfaces, cosmetics, and household chemicals.

  • Because the physical degradation, accidental fracturing, or theft of a gemstone is not covered by a craftsmanship warranty, we strongly advise acquiring dedicated jewelry insurance. This ensures your financial investment is fully protected against accidental damage, catastrophic loss, or theft.

  • Yes. The Stark Promise applies to any piece designed, crafted, or serviced in our studio. When we perform a repair or alteration on an existing piece of jewelry, we stand behind the specific work we performed. If a setting or repair we executed fails due to our craftsmanship, we will correct it immediately at no charge.
