Handcrafted Elegance: The Making of a Custom Architectural Diamond Ring
When most people think of a diamond ring, they picture a traditional solitaire or a classic halo. But for clients who view jewelry as wearable art, the design possibilities are limitless.
Recently at Stark Jewelers in Sacramento, we were tasked with designing a bold, structural statement ring. The goal was to create an architectural piece featuring striking negative space, varying bezel-set diamonds, and a sweeping two-tone mixed-metal element.
Because custom jewelry design is a highly technical process, we documented this ring's journey from its earliest stages to the final polish. Here is how master goldsmith Larry Stark handcrafted this spectacular piece.
Phase 1: The Wax Prototype
Every great architectural structure starts with a blueprint, and in custom jewelry, that blueprint is often a wax model. Before any metal is melted, the ring is modeled in a jeweler's wax. This allows us to map out the complex multi-band structure, calculate the exact spacing for the negative gaps, and ensure the ring will sit comfortably on the finger despite its wide profile.
Phase 2: The Raw Casting
Once the wax model is perfected, it undergoes the lost-wax casting process. The wax is melted away inside a plaster mold, and molten white gold is injected into the cavity. When it emerges, it is a rough, unpolished metal frame. At this stage, it looks industrial and raw—but the structural foundation is perfectly set.
Phase 3: Bench Assembly and Stone Setting
This ring is a masterclass in mixed-metal contrast. At the bench, Larry goes to work integrating the different elements.
The Bezels: The main diamonds are carefully secured in heavy white gold bezels. Unlike prongs, bezels frame the entire perimeter of the diamond with metal, giving it a modern, incredibly secure, and seamless look.
The Yellow Gold Wave: To break up the stark white gold and diamonds, Larry integrated a custom sweeping "wave" of yellow gold, completely encrusted in pavé-set diamonds. This element weaves dynamically through the bezel settings, adding warmth and visual movement to the rigid architectural bands.
Phase 4: The Final Polish
After hours of filing, setting, and microscopic adjustments at the wooden bench peg, the ring is brought to the polishing wheel. The white gold is buffed to a mirror finish, highlighting the brilliance of the diamonds and the rich contrast of the yellow gold wave. The final result is a breathtaking, sculptural piece of high jewelry that is entirely one-of-a-kind.
