Step 1: Evaluating the Structural Integrity

Before making any modifications to an antique piece, Larry closely inspects the metal and gemstone settings under a microscope. He ensures that the century-old gold prong work holding the sapphire and diamonds is still structurally stable enough to withstand the heat and stress of modifications.

Step 2: Removing the Pin Assembly

The core of a brooch-to-pendant conversion involves removing the functional pin hardware on the back. Larry carefully cuts away the long pin stem, the hinge, and the safety catch. Using precision hand files and abrasive wheels at his bench block, he smooths down the remaining attachment points until the back of the piece is perfectly flush, polished, and comfortable against the wearer's skin.

Step 3: Fabricating and Attaching the Custom Bail

A pendant needs a loop (called a bail) for a chain to slide through. To keep the conversion looking authentic to its original era, Larry hand-creates a custom gold bail that matches the exact alloy color and stylistic flow of the vintage frame.

The bail is then seamlessly laser-welded or soldered to the top apex of the brooch. Larry ensures the balance point is perfectly calculated so that when the pendant hangs from a chain, it sits straight and doesn’t flip forward or tilt to the side.

Step 4: Finishing and Polishing

Finally, the piece undergoes an intensive deep cleaning in our ultrasonic cleaner and a professional polish. Decades of built-up dust and oils hidden underneath the sapphire and diamonds are swept away, completely restoring the original fiery brilliance of the stones.
