Master Goldsmithing: Fabricating 18k Gold & Platinum Jewelry (Part 2)

Welcome back to the jeweler's bench! In Part 1 of this series, we introduced you to a breathtaking 3-carat loose diamond and the heartfelt vision behind it: a custom "JJ" initial pendant crafted as an anniversary gift.

Today, we are diving into the heavy metal magic. Turning a sketch into a wearable piece of fine jewelry requires extreme precision, intense heat, and decades of goldsmithing expertise. Here is how our Master Jewelers in Sacramento brought the "JJ" pendant to life.

Forging the 18k Yellow Gold

For the body of the pendant, we selected 18k yellow gold. Known for its rich, buttery color, 18k gold provides a classic and luxurious warmth that beautifully contrasts with a white diamond.

After shaping the individual components, our jeweler assembled the raw gold framework, which you can see in its early stages in the images. To fuse these pieces into a single, seamless structure, we use a jeweler's torch. You can see the intense, focused heat required to perfectly solder the gold curves of the "JJ" initials together without melting the delicate wirework.

After shaping the individual components, our jeweler assembled the raw gold framework, which you can see in its early stages crafted in our studio in Arden Arcade.

The Secret to Security: A Platinum Head

While 18k yellow gold is gorgeous, setting a massive 3-carat diamond requires the ultimate structural integrity. That is why we utilized a mixed-metal approach.

Instead of setting the diamond directly into the gold, we custom-built a platinum head (the prong structure that holds the stone). Platinum is incredibly dense and durable, ensuring the prongs will not bend or wear down over time. Additionally, the bright white color of platinum acts like a mirror, enhancing the colorless icy brilliance of the diamond rather than casting a yellow reflection into the stone.

Our jeweler using tweezers to precisely position the platinum head into the center of the 18k gold "JJ" framework. Because tolerances are measured in fractions of a millimeter, our Master Jeweler carefully inspects the alignment using a specialized magnifying loupe. Every angle must be flawless before the head is permanently secured.

With the heavy fabrication complete, the stage is finally set for the star of the show. Check back for Part 3, where we will expertly set the 3-carat diamond and reveal the final, spectacular piece!
