Rather than relying on pre-cast mass production, master bench jeweler Larry Stark took a structural approach to this custom project, hand-fabricating a bespoke ring from pure platinum.
Here is a look behind the bench at how this statement piece transitioned from raw industrial metal into a tailored masterpiece.
Phase 1: Pure Platinum Deconstruction
Platinum is the ultimate choice for luxury bridal jewelry due to its incredible durability, but its high density makes it famously stubborn to manipulate at the bench.
The fabrication journey began with raw platinum bar stock and green jeweler's wax guides resting on the bench peg. To achieve a multi-layered, wide-band design with precision negative space, the rings could not be cast as a single unit. Instead, the design was deconstructed into individual puzzle-like components — including custom-formed bezel walls and inner sleeve liners—that had to be shaped entirely by hand.
Phase 2: High-Heat Assembly & Structural Fit
Every component was hand-filed and sanded to ensure perfect geometric alignment. Using a high-heat torch, the individual platinum layers were permanently fused together. This architectural thickness gives the ring set an ultra-modern, substantial presence on the hand while ensuring maximum security for the gemstones.
Phase 3: Setting the 4-Carat Icon
Once the structural chassis was completed and pre-polished, the mounting was locked into a jeweler's block for the final, critical step: setting the diamonds.
The focal point is the breathtaking 4-carat center diamond, seamlessly nested inside a smooth bezel. It is flanked by two equally impressive brilliant-cut side diamonds, creating a continuous wall of fire across the finger. Pushing thick platinum over stones of this size requires flawless tool control to lock the gems in place without putting undue stress on the crystals.
