Christmas in July: Why Now is the Perfect Time to Start Your Custom Holiday Jewelry

It might be the middle of summer here in Sacramento, but at Stark Jewelers, our bench is already looking ahead to the holiday season.

If you have ever considered giving the gift of custom jewelry—whether it is a bespoke engagement ring, a reimagined family heirloom, or a completely original statement piece—timing is everything. True craftsmanship cannot be rushed.

To give you an idea of what goes into a bespoke piece, we are taking you behind the scenes of a beautiful new project currently on our bench: a sweeping, organic design featuring a stunning pair of triangular blue topaz stones.

The Blueprint: From Sketch to Wax

Every great piece of jewelry starts with an idea. For this project, the client wanted to highlight two vibrant, trillion-cut blue topaz gemstones.

As you can see in below, the first step after finalizing the design is drafting a hand-drawn sketch to scale. This acts as our blueprint. From there, master jeweler Larry Stark begins carving the individual elements out of rigid green jeweler's wax.

You can see the individual carved components. Each piece must be meticulously shaped, filed, and angled to ensure it will lay perfectly against the body once cast in metal.

Assembling the Vision

Before any metal is melted, we do a full mock-up. In below images, the carved wax elements are arranged exactly over the sketch, with the actual blue topaz stones set in place to check the visual balance.

This wax model will eventually be encased in plaster, the wax will be melted out, and molten precious metal will be poured into the cavity to create the final, structural piece.

Why You Should Start Your Holiday Projects Now

Creating a bespoke piece of jewelry is a collaborative, multi-step journey. The timeline typically looks like this:

  1. Consultation & Sourcing: Discussing your vision and sourcing the perfect diamonds or colored gemstones.

  2. Sketching & Wax: Creating the visual blueprint and physical wax model (which requires your final approval).

  3. Casting & Fabrication: Turning the wax into raw metal.

  4. Setting & Finishing: Hand-setting the stones and applying the final high polish.

This process takes several weeks. By starting your project in late summer or early fall, you guarantee a stress-free process and ensure your spectacular gift is ready long before the holiday rush begins.
