Breathing New Life into Family Heirlooms: A Tale of Three Rings

The Magic of Heirloom Restoration There is nothing quite like the sentimental value of heirloom jewelry. But over decades of love and daily wear, diamonds can chip and metal can wear dangerously thin. Recently, a client came to us with a beautiful challenge: a vintage diamond halo ring with multiple chipped accent diamonds, along with two other family rings she no longer wore.

The Diagnosis: Paper-Thin Prongs and Chipped Stones When we examined the two additional heirloom rings under the microscope, we found a common, yet dangerous issue. The prongs holding the diamonds had worn down so significantly that they were the thickness of aluminum foil. In fact, we captured a video showing just how easily these prongs could be bent back with a simple tool. One wrong bump, and those diamonds would have been lost forever.

Meanwhile, her primary ring—a stunning vintage piece—had beautiful bones but suffered from several chipped accent diamonds in the halo.

The Solution: A Sustainable and Sentimental Repair Our master jewelers proposed a beautiful solution: we would safely harvest the intact diamonds from the two dangerously worn rings and use them to replace the chipped stones in her favorite halo ring.

Here is what our restoration process involved:

  1. Careful Extraction: Gently removing the heirloom diamonds from the failing, foil-thin prongs.

  2. Precision Setting: Replacing the chipped diamonds in the halo ring with the harvested heirloom stones.

  3. Re-tipping and Reinforcement: Rebuilding the prongs and structural integrity of the halo ring so it can withstand decades of future wear.

  4. Polishing and Finishing: A deep clean, polish, and rhodium plating to bring out that brilliant, mirror-like shine.

Peace of Mind: Appraised and Guaranteed When she picked up her ring, the tears of joy said it all. She now has one spectacular, structurally sound family heirloom that honors all three original pieces. To ensure her complete peace of mind, the finished ring was presented with a comprehensive appraisal for her insurance, and it is fully backed by our Lifetime Warranty.
