The Art of Heirloom Transformation: Engineering the Bespoke Andesite Pendant
Every piece of jewelry carries an emotional footprint. However, many of our most treasured family heirlooms spend years tucked away in dark velvet boxes, simply because their vintage styles no longer fit modern aesthetics. At Stark Jewelers, we believe these exceptional gemstones deserve to be seen, celebrated, and worn every single day.
In this exclusive behind-the-scenes look, we pull back the curtain on our latest masterpiece: The 14k Yellow Gold Andesite Pendant Project. Walk with us through the complete journey of a one-of-a-kind heirloom transformation—from raw bench materials to a breathtaking, high-jewelry pendant.
Phase 1: Concept, Wax, and Rails
A true custom design doesn’t begin with a generic casting. It begins with structural geometry. Our process for the Andesite Pendant launched with two contrasting tracks. First, we sculpted a precise green structural wax model to visualize the sweeping, leaf-like organic outer curves of the pendant. Concurrently, we hand-milled heavy gold rails and an intricate central bridge insert designed specifically to hold a channel of premium accent diamonds.
By arranging these raw metal components next to our casting wax at the bench (as seen in our project design layout), our goldsmiths were able to refine the exact clearances needed for a perfectly balanced, fluid drape on the neckline.
Phase 2: Master Engineering – Welding the Double Gallery
The defining element of this custom pendant is its high-performance structural integrity. To elevate the vibrant, deep red center stone, we built a custom double-gallery setting.
A double gallery utilizes two parallel horizontal wire rails connected by vertical pillars, forming an elevated basket. This technique is highly prized in bespoke jewelry making because it lifts the gemstone entirely off the solid base of the pendant, allowing light to flood into the pavilion and back facets.
Behind the Bench: Standard mass-produced casting often results in bulky, light-blocking metal baskets. We joined the delicate structural wires cleanly without compromising the pristine finish of the polished metal surfaces. This creates a floating visual illusion while remaining structurally indestructible.
Phase 3: The Finished Masterpiece
The result is a striking juxtaposition of clean architectural lines and blazing color. A sparkling river of pavé-set diamonds draws the eye downward, terminating at the custom-secured red centerpiece. The main body of the pendant sweeps down into an elongated, polished gold horn or talon motif, catching light effortlessly with every movement of the wearer. Suspended from a premium classic marine-link chain, the piece is balanced perfectly to sit flat against the chest without rolling or flipping.
